The longer version:
Multi-disciplinary with a BA Degree in English and a Masters in information technology, Robin Catling worked in the corporate sector as an IT and business change manager, project manager, technical trainer and technical author. Clients included American Express, British Airways, IBM, Thompson TUI, The Pensions Regulator and a variety of other travel, insurance and utility companies.
After six years in the film and TV industry, Robin went back into IT as web manager for Research in Practice as Dartington Hall Trust.
He also produced and directed theatre in Brighton, UK in the far-off 1990’s.
Previous writing gigs included Full Circle Magazine as a technical author, and presenter of the audio Full Circle Podcast (Internet radio). Some of the audio output spilled over into the spoof education show Tomorrow’s Technology Today.
Robin also curated the website Everything Express (“Culture, Style, Technology: Express Everything”) for nearly ten years.
In addition to the personal blog Creative Writing and other Errors, he has a movie review site Catling on Film, and a technology blog the Catling Mindswipe. He continues to build and maintain websites for private clients and small charities such as OCRA and Okehampton Flyers.
Ghosted two publications for minor public figures, which under the non-disclosure agreements can’t be…er, disclosed (one’s a cricketer who used to do local radio).
A fantasy sitcom remains in development hell after several years and this may be time for a comeback. A new radio sitcom script is in development for Audible.
He is currently working on four sports and coaching books under the independent imprint Proactivity Press.
A founder of West Devon Swords, he teaches Olympic sport fencing as a three-weapon British Fencing coach, as well as historical swordplay within the Historical Western Martial Arts tradition (HEMA); everything from longsword to rapier to sword and buckler.
Big screen, small screen
As a fencing coach and long-bow archer, he found himself the movie business for Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott on Robin Hood shooting arrows with the intent to miss.
Major movie projects followed including Martin Scorceses’ Hugo, Captain America, Warhorse for Spielberg, and if you Freeze-frame Harry Potter at the Ministry of Magic in Deathly Hallows 1, there’s a very cool middle-of-shot walk-through. Repeat appearances in Holby City included the Legionnaires’ outbreak episode as a visitor, patient and the maintenance man who caused it all in the first place! There were some odd (very odd) TV commercials, TV dramas (Sleepyhead, Injustice, Dirk Gently, Atlantis) and sit-coms (Trollied, The Job Lot).
